  • God's character
He helps us to understand His will (1:7) 
He is holy and wants us to be holy (1:9) .
He has purpose and grace from eternity past (1:9)
God is a giver of good gifts (1:6-7,9)
God has power to keep us. He fulfills all His promises (the scope of his power) to the end (the duration of His power) (1:12)
God is the one who judges righteously (2:15, 4:8)
He is faithful to keep us till the end (1:12) 
He is merciful (1:18)
God forgives (2:25)
He is faithful to His own character and promises (2:13) 
He knows who are truly His (2:19)
He is a righteous judge, rewarding and punishing rightly.

He saves His servants (3:11, 4:17-18)
He speaks through His Word - He wants to be known (3:16)

  • The Christian life

Is a sincere faith (1:5)
It is a life of power, love and self-control (1:7): the power of the Spirit for ministry and love for God and man is balanced by wisdom and discipline.
Is a holy calling (1:9)
It is a  life centred around the gospel: in guarding it, suffering for it, passing it on and preaching it.
Involves confidence in God keeping us to the end (1:12) 
Is strengthened by grace (2:1, 4:22) 
Has qualities of a soldier, athlete, farmer (2:3-6): single-mindedness in suffering, discipline, endurance, hard work.
A life thinking of other Christians (2:10, )
A pursuit of righteousness, faith, love and peace (2:22a)
A pure heart (2:22b) 
A rejection of the values of this present world (4:10)

1 Cor 9:1-18 is Paul’s defence of his apostleship to a difficult church. He insists from commonsense (v.7-8), Scripture (v.8-10), natural justice(v.11-12) and Jewish custom (v.13) that he is totally entitled to material support from the Corinthians. However, he refuses to exercise this right, and takes pains to ensure that mentioning his right is not misunderstood as an attempt to exercise it. He is concerned for the purity of the gospel, which must not be sullied by greed on the part of the preacher. He will never be put in a position where his integrity is compromised by accusations of personal gain by his preaching (v.15). He will “boast” that he can present the gospel free of charge. QC and SG accountabilkity session (1/7/16)

 Wen Ai shared about the book she was reading ("Furious Love") and how it had touched her and made her feel the need to love people more. (Thanks, Wen Ai!) The book had stories of individuals who were faithful in small ways and who were able to make their love for people concrete. I asked the question then: "Are we supposed to love everyone equally? Do we love, for instance, Christians more than non-Christians?". Joshua then asked, "Does God love everyone equally?", which led to our main discussion for the evening! There is certainly a sense in which God loves everyone, but it is clear that He does 'play favourites'. Shaun kept saying, "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated" (Rom 9:13). If God's love is expressed in action, and some are saved and some are not, clearly God does not love all in exactly the same way.
