Study 58. Luke 24:36-53

10 a. At least three of those present already had seen Jesus risen, and everyone else had believed them (24:33-35). Still, how did everyone react when Jesus suddenly appeared (24:37)? This is the same appearance as in John 20:19ff., Jesus shows the disciples the marks of his wounds and gives them the greeting of peace. This incident occurs when the two from Emmaus return .   The disciples were 'startled'. Likely because Jesus' appearance was sudden. They were also 'frightened'. The is harder to explain.   b. Why do you think they reacted in this way? Morris: "That they were frightened is not quite so explicable. They had just been telling the two from Emmaus that ‘The Lord has risen indeed’. But it is one thing to accept such a statement on the word of someone else about an absent Person and quite another to accept it for oneself when the Person is suddenly present despite locked doors. Small wonder that they supposed that they saw a spirit, i.e. a

Study 57. Luke 24:13-24

The verb 'drew' near might refer to an approach from any direction, but as the two speak of Jesus as being from Jerusalem (18), the meaning must be that he overtook them as they journeyed. On a number of occasions the risen Jesus was not recognized at first (Matt. 28:17; John 20:14; 21:4); so now.      5. Observe why the two disciples are sad and confused. a. How do they describe their former Master, whom they used to call the Christ (24:19)  A prophet. True, but inadequate mighty in word and deed before God and all the people. b. What disappointing and confusing things have happened (24:20-24) Their chief priests and rulers delievered him up to be condemed to death and crucified him. The chief blame is placed on the Jewish leaders. They had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel Some women they knew amazed them because they had seen a vision of angels who said he was alive. Some of the (men) found the tomb just as the women had said, but they did not see him. There

Study 56. Luke 23:50 - 24:12

1. How does 23:50-56 fulfill Isaiah's prophecy in Is 53:9? What is significant about this? Jesus fulfils OT prophecy. Jesus' humiliation ends with death. Thereafter he is exalted (in the spices (Jn 19:39) and the tomb.   2. What did the women find when they went to Jesus' tomb at down on Sunday (24:2-8)? At least 5 women were present (24:10) The stone was rolled away The body was gone Two men were there, 3. What did the "men" say to the women at the tomb (24:5-7)?   They announced the Resurrection and reminded them of Jesus' words.   4. How did the apostles respond to the women's report?  With incredulity. They were not superstitious peasants who were primed to believe what they wished to be true. Only Peter ran ahead. His heart would have been trying to be close to the Lord that he denied. He ran toward Jesus despite his denial, not away from Hi.  John's Gospel tells of John also accompanying Peter, and seeing and believing at the layout of the gra
