Study 56. Luke 23:50 - 24:12

1. How does 23:50-56 fulfill Isaiah's prophecy in Is 53:9? What is significant about this?
Jesus fulfils OT prophecy.
Jesus' humiliation ends with death. Thereafter he is exalted (in the spices (Jn 19:39) and the tomb.

2. What did the women find when they went to Jesus' tomb at down on Sunday (24:2-8)?
At least 5 women were present (24:10)
  • The stone was rolled away
  • The body was gone
  • Two men were there,

3. What did the "men" say to the women at the tomb (24:5-7)?
They announced the Resurrection and reminded them of Jesus' words.

4. How did the apostles respond to the women's report?
With incredulity. They were not superstitious peasants who were primed to believe what they wished to be true.
Only Peter ran ahead. His heart would have been trying to be close to the Lord that he denied. He ran toward Jesus despite his denial, not away from Hi.
John's Gospel tells of John also accompanying Peter, and seeing and believing at the layout of the grave clothes.

What does the Resurrection prove? (Rom 1:4)
[Jesus] was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord,
  • The Resurrection affirmed Jesus' identity and power

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, (1 Pe 1:3)

  • The Resurrection affirms our eternal hope.

We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. .(Ro 6:5)

And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power.(1 Cor 6:14)

having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead. (Col 2:12)

But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. (1 Cor 15:20-22)

knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence. (2 Cor 4:14)
  • In our union with Christ it is assurance that we too will rise to new spiritual life as well as physical life after death.

It will be counted to us who believe in him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord, 25 who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification. (Rom 4:25)

  • The Resurrection is evidence that the Father accepted Christ's atoning sacrifice, and we who are united in Christ are also accepted in Him.

...and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might 20 that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead  (Rom 1:19)

If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. (Rom 8:11)

  • We know the extent of God's power available to us through the Resurrection

The Resurrection was a Trinitarian action.
  • The Father raised Jesus
  • Jesus lay down and took up his own life
For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.” (Jn 10:18)
  • The Spirit raised Jesus
For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit,(1 Pe 3:18), also Rom 1:4

[Joseph of Arimathea] had not given his consent to the execution of Jesus. He must have been absent, for the vote was unanimous (note the ‘all’ of 22:70; Mark 14:64).
Elsewhere we learn that Joseph had prepared this tomb for himself (Matt. 27:60).
Mark tells us that as they went they discussed the problem of moving the heavy stone from the mouth of the tomb. Luke says only that when they arrived they found it already rolled away. When later on the beloved disciple came to the tomb he was diffident about entering it (John 20:5), but the women had no such hesitation. When they went in, however, they did not find the body.
Luke lists the names of some of the women. Mary Magdalene, the first to see the risen Lord (cf. Mark 16:9), is mentioned in each of the four Gospels in the resurrection narrative. But apart from her connection with the crucifixion and resurrection we hear of her only in 8:2. Joanna is mentioned only here and in 8:2. ‘James’s Mary’ (as Mark 16:1) would normally be taken as ‘Mary, the wife of James’ but rsv’s the mother of James is probably correct (cf. Mark 15:40); she appears to be ‘the other Mary’ (of Matt. 28:1). These and the other women (who will include Salome, Mark 16:1) told the apostles what they had seen and heard. (Morris)
