Revelation Study 10. Revelation 5
Seven horns and seven eyes (5:6): perfect power and knowledge
Harp . . . incense (5:8). Normal features of Hebrew worship (Psalm 33:2, 141:2) to the Lamb
Why does John weep? (5:4)
Not from frustrated curiosity, but because he understands that without the revelation and accomplishment of God's purposes, life is meaningless. There is no judgment, and there is no salvation.
5. For what is the Lamb praised and worshiped (5:9-10,12-13)?
He was 'slain'
By His death he has:
- redeemed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation - the salvation is universal in scope
- made them a kingdom and priests to God (Ex 19:6). We reign under the King and have access to God.
- they shall reign on the earth - creation itself will be redeemed
The Lamb is worthy 'to receive'. There is distinction from God ("between the throne and the four living creatures") yet identification with God (Rev 7:17)
6. How has He triumphed (5:5)? How has He purchased men for God with His blood (5:9)? (Optional: See John 19:16-37; Hebrews 9:11-14,22; 10:1-18; 1 John 2:1-2.)
John 19:16-37 Jesus died on Calvary
Hebrews 9:11-14 He offered his own blood before the ture Holy Place of heaven to God, purifying us
Hebrews 9:22 The blood atoned for sin
Hebrews 10:1-18 This offering was efficacious for all time.
1 John 2:1-2. He 'propriated' God's wrath (i.e. made God favourable towards us, cf. 'expiation', which speaks of the removal of sin)
For Further Study: On Revelation 5:5, see Genesis 49:9 and Isaiah 11:1, both prophecies of the Messiah.
Jesus is the majestic Lion of Judah
Jesus is the offspring of David's house.
Optlonal Application: How should your actions and outlook be affected by the fact that you are part of God's Kingdom and one of His priests (5:10)?
Knowing our spiritual authority in Christ (cf. M 28:18) to witness and to fight satanic power (Lk 10:19). We are under the authority of the King. we stand for His values.
Connecting to God directly in prayer, without the need for intermediaries ("the priesthood of all believers")
Helping people connect to God. Being holy.
7. How is this relevant to your life today?
7. How is this relevant to your life today?
Gratitude for grace, demonstration of grace
Worship
8. Why do you think the Lamb's triumph makes Him worthy to open the seals on the scroll? (Consider what the scroll might be.)
A scroll with writing on both sides (5:1) (cf. Ez 2:10) complete and unalterable
The
scroll represents all God's purposes of blessing and judgment for
mankind. The seals prevent the disclosure and activation of its
contents.(cf. Da 12:4)
God's purpose for Creation is not realized without the Cross
9. What can we learn about worship (its meaning, nature, reasons) from 4:1-5:14?
It is directed to the true God alone, who is sovereign over all things
It responds to His holy, eternal, ever-living, wise, overflowing, powerful nature.
It rests on the salvation bought by Christ's death
It is directed to God in Christ
He is worthy for specific reasons.
The attitude of reverence and submission.
Worship is what we were destined for.
